Ilko Kucheriv Democracy Fellowship Program opens calls for applications for 2016

PASOS has announced a call for applications to participate in the 2016 Ilko Kucheriv Democracy Fellowship Program. Deadline to apply is April 19, 2016. PASOS is partnering with network members the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation (IKDIF) and the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) to offer the fellowships. The program, made possible with the financial support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), seeks to assist the advancement of democratic practices in transitional democracies.

Maria Zolkina spoke at the workshop “Frontiers of Democracy: Embedding Democratic Values in Moldova and Ukraine”

The trends of political and civic participation have been changing in Ukraine Euromaidan. Volunteering has been on the rise, horizontal links creating a community became stronger, and indeed trust in non-state institutions and movements (volunteers, church, NGOs, volunteer battalions) has increased. At the same time, when it comes to trust-distrust balance regarding state and political actors has returned to negative numbers after some increase on the wave of Revolution. The only state-related institution in which people trust more now are Defense Forces of Ukraine. To rebuild trust, the delivery of reforms (especially in areas prioritized the most by the public – anticorruption, law enforcement) will be key, said Zolkina. While the volunteer movement is unprecedentedly strong, it cannot substitute the state, she noted.

All Quiet on the Other Front? State and Prospectives of Reforms in Ukraine

Today, Ukraine fights on two fronts – one to regain its territorial integrity against Russia’s aggression, and the second one is the front of reforms. Elections-2014: Expectations of citizens, ratings of candidates, and motivation of choice

Leader of pre-election race is Petro Poroshenko who is supported by 44.6% of those, who will participate in elections. 8,4% are ready to vote for Yuliya Tymoshenko, 7,5% – for Anatoliy Hrytsenko, 7,0% – for Serhiy Tigipko, 5,4% for Oleh Lyashko, 3,1% – for Petro Symonenko, 2,6% – for Mykhaylo Dobkin, 1,7% – for Olha Bohomolets, 1,6% – for Vadym Rabinovych. Other candidates have less than 1% of support.

In Ukraine, as well as in Russia majority of respondents wants both countries to be independent, but friendly - with open borders, without visas and customs houses (in Ukraine – 68%, in Russia – 59%). In Ukraine with numbers have decreased since November, 2013 by 5%, in Russia – increased by 4%.
